Become a seal researcher and dive into the mystery of the seal! Something is happening in the Wadden Sea...
Every year, many common seal pups are born. Yet the overall population of common seals is declining. Young seals, in particular, seem to disappear during their first year of life. Why is this happening? We don't yet know the answer.

To uncover the cause, the WEC and Utrecht University are carrying out extensive research into the seals of the Wadden Sea. Every seal tells part of the story. By carefully examining seals that are found dead, we learn more about their health, their habitat and the challenges they face. Perhaps they cannot find enough food, become entangled in plastic, are disturbed too often, or pollution is affecting them. What we discover not only helps us better understand seals, but also reveals the state of the Wadden Sea itself.
Discover the mystery for yourself with our interactive trail!
During your visit to the WEC, you can become a researcher yourself! Our interactive trail puts you in the role of a seal scientist. Follow the life journey of a seal: from a newborn pup on a sandbank, through life beneath the waves, to the challenges seals face today. Along the way, you'll discover how researchers work, why some seals end up in the seal hospital, and how scientific research helps protect the Wadden Sea.
The trail includes fun activities, search games, drawing challenges and questions that introduce children to the science behind seal research through play. It is suitable for visitors of all ages, with activities at two levels: one for younger children and one for everyone aged seven and over. There's something for every budding researcher to discover!
