Bring seals back to their home: the Wadden Sea
No seal stays permanently in our hospital in Lauwersoog. Once they have fully recovered, they are returned by the Seal Centre Pieterburen Foundation to where they belong: the Wadden Sea. An unforgettable experience!
Releasing seals is one of the most beautiful and special moments of our work. After months of care and recovery, the time has finally come: they can return home. Some seals quietly explore their surroundings first, while others dive straight into the water. Every release is unique. And you can be there!
View datesDuration and programme
We depart by boat from the harbour of Lauwersoog and sail to a sandbank in the Wadden Sea.
The time of departure depends on the tide. Sometimes we leave in the morning and sometimes in the evening. On average, a release lasts three hours, depending on the weather and how fast the seals move into the sea. In good weather, there is also time for a short walk on the sandbank.
It can be colder on the water than on land, so bring warm clothes and put on boots! In summer, you can put on shorts and shoes that are allowed to get wet or that you can take off easily.
